Kinja'd!!!

We all have odd habits, time to kill a friday afternoon by sharing them.

I like to cruise (emphasis: CRUISE) with the front of the seat up high enough and the steering wheel low enough that I can sit my hand on my leg and hold it between my finger and thumb. *Don’t worry, this position is CRUISE ONLY. Any situation involving more in depth driving gets a more well accepted position.*

Your turn.

I tend to drive with my pelvis deep inside the seat back and using pressure differences in my butt to steer.

More of a preference thing, really: I like to hold the bottom of the steering wheel, right in the center. On more than a couple cars I’ve rented, the steering wheel is either a three-spoke design, or a four-spoke with the bottom two spokes really close together. This annoys me to no end.

For reference:

^^^ GOOD - large gap at bottom ^^^

^^^ BAD - no gap at bottom ^^^

I like to rest my arm on the window ledge if it’s open (during the summer it practically always is when I’m driving) and my left three fingers are outside of the wheel, my index is above the 9 o clock spoke and my thumb is placed below. Kind of like making the “okay” sign with your hand but your thumb and index are wrapped around the wheel spoke.

Being able to hold the wheel roughly like that was so important after I had surgery on my arm. Couldn’t move my arm enough to turn the wheel, but I could at least hold it with my immobilized arm, allowing me to do things (signal, etc.) with my right arm.

The odd thing about my position is that I don’t find resting on the dead pedal at all comfortable, so I keep my left leg significantly bent with my foot flat on the floor, which also causes me to sit with my pelvis at an angle as opposed to pointing straight forward.

I used to make MS Paint drawings while driving. Huehuehue.

So THAT’S what the hole at the bottom of the wheel is for.

I have a habit of crossing my arms and the left hand on the right top of the steering wheel, right hand on the left top. Left hand on the bottom because watch.

Back when I took my driver’s test in my Firebird I kept using both hands at around 5 and 7... my instructor called it “Milking The Cow”.

Steering wheels on Buick Park Ave or Lincoln Town cars are awesome. You can throw your hand at the bottom, or put the bottom of your hand on top of the center piece.

P.S. I started looking at Park Ave steering wheel which led me to look at park avenues for sale... which leads me into a deep dark hole of surrounding my self with excessive amounts of Park Avenues.

Is there a rehab center for Park Ave addicts?

This is basically what I do. Maybe it’s an accustomed habit that comes with 4-spoke wheels.

I sometimes do this just to break the monotony on long highway trips.

Yea I don’t know what to do with my left leg in an automatic either. The dead-pedals are always way too far down, so some cars I rest my left foot on the door edge.

I guess. I don’t even think about it. But when I get into a car w/ a three-spoke wheel, i’m very uncomfortable.

Or at least, mildly annoyed.

I never use the dead pedal. Though that’s more because of me bracing myself since my seats have almost no bolstering

I go 3 and 9 because the arm rests in the 4Runner suck. The middle one is pretty far back and the doors are so thin that there’s not really an armrest there.

Not that position is much like you pictured above, but the hand is moved rearward toward the pelvis.

I learned to drive in my dad’s Acura MDX with a four spoke like so: Somehow, i’ve always found it comfortable if I’m just on the highway or whatever to dangle my hands by the thumbs on the top two spokes.

Kinja'd!!!

A habit that carries well into my E36:

Kinja'd!!!

And while not at all comfortable, I still always found myself doing on the fat three spoke in the Volvo S40 I owned before the E36:
